How to Install a Caterpillar 320D2 EXCAVATOR Water Pump

NOTE: Keep all parts clean and free of foreign matter. Foreign matter will cause rapid wear and shorten component life.
NOTE: When inspecting, maintaining, testing, adjusting, and repairing the product, always take care to ensure that fluids are contained.
Before opening any chamber or disassembling any component that contains fluids, be prepared to collect the fluids in a suitable container.
Dispose of all fluids in accordance with local regulations and directives.
1. Ensure that the water pump is clean and free of wear or damage. If necessary, replace the water pump.

2. Install the cover to the water pump, if necessary. Install the cover by following steps 2.a through 2.d.
a. Clean the gasket surface of the cover (7).
b. Position the new gasket (6) (not shown) onto the water pump (3).
c. Install the cover (7) onto the water pump (3).
d. Install bolts (9) to cover (7). Tighten bolts finger-tight.
3. Clean the gasket surface of the front cover (1).
4. Install Tooling (A) in position (X).
5. Use Tooling (A) to align the new gasket (2) with the front cover (1). Install the gasket to the front cover.
6. Align the water pump (3) with Tooling (A). Install the water pump to the front cover (1).
Note: Make sure the gears of the water pump mesh with the gears of the injection pump.

(4) M8 × 75 mm
(8) M8 × 65 mm
7. Install bolts (4), (5), and (8). Refer to Figure 3. Tighten the bolts by hand. Note: Make sure all bolts of different lengths are installed in the correct position.
8. Remove Tool (A) and install the remaining bolts (4).
9. Tighten bolts (4), (5), (8), and (9) in the order shown in Figure 4 to a torque of 22 N·m (195 lb in).
10. Install the hose to the water pump inlet. Tighten the hose clamp securely.
11. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Cooling System Coolant – Change” for the correct
procedure.
